HOW TO REPLACE A LOST OR DAMAGED NUMBER PLATE
Section 12 (1) of the Traffic Act provides that no motor vehicle shall be used on a road unless the identification plates are fixed in the prescribed manner.
Process for replacing the number plate of a motor vehicle
- Report the loss/damage to a police station and obtain a police abstract.
- Go to the headquarters of Traffic with the police abstract and original logbook so as to obtain a ‘tape lift’.
- Obtain an affidavit for lost or damaged number plate (www.lawyerwangu.com)
- Log into NTSA TIMS
- Select apply for reflective number plate.
- Select lost or defaced.
- Indicate the type of plate (oblong or square).
- Fill in the required details.
- Upload the ‘tape lift’ report, police abstract and the sworn Affidavit for lost or damaged number plate.
- Indicate the station which you wish to pick the number plate from.
- Pay the required fee
- Collect your number plate when it is ready.
Documents required when applying
- Original logbook
- Police abstract
- Identity card or passport of registered vehicle owner (should match the name on the logbook)
- Original and copy of certificate of incorporation/ Business Registration Certificate (for companies)

Documents required when collecting
- Old number plates (for damaged plates only)
- Police abstract
- Original ID or passport of registered vehicle owner
- Original ID or passport of the persona authorized to collect the number plates
- Letter of authority to collect (for companies)
