How to replace a lost birth certificate
A birth certificate is the first official identification document validating your legal right to all services entitled to Kenyan citizens. Section 26 (3) of Births and deaths registration Act states that upon payment of the prescribed fee, the Principal registrar shall provide a birth certificate.
Process – Physical application
- Visit the Department for Civil registration or a Huduma Centre and present your birth notification or retrieve a copy of the notification;
- Fill in the application form and pay the prescribed fee; and
- You will be notified once the birth certificate is ready.
Documents required
a. Copy of birth notification.
b. Copy of birth certificate.
c. Original national Identity Card.
d. Copies of ID card or Passport of the parents. In case one of the parents is dead, you’ll be required to present the death certificate.
Online application – Children
Note: The online process is only available for children born in Nairobi region.
Process
- Log into the parents e-citizen portal;
- Select civil registration department;
- Select birth certificate then select apply for replacement;
- Fill in the required details and upload all the necessary documents;
- Pay the required fee; and
- You will be notified once the birth certificate is ready.

b. Copy of the parent’s ID.
Online application – Adult
Note: The online process is only available for persons born in Nairobi region.
